Book, Bike, & Dodgeball
February 7th, 2007
Sports, BooksThese first few weeks of 2007 have been a wild ride. A couple weeks ago I decided to leave my comfy-but-lonely full-time job with Erickson Marketing and take a new position at a local web development company downtown called Cyberwoven. Somehow my 2 week notice has flown by and I’ll be starting that job on Monday. But wait! There’s more.
My personal copies of my book arrived last night, and they are AWESOME! It’s still hard to believe that I wrote a book, so it’s strange for me to see my name on the cover. The title is “The Principles of Beautiful Web Design” and it should be available for you all to buy
sometime in March. I’m so excited!
Also, I bought a mountain bike! I’ve been telling Ames since before we moved here that I wanted to get into mountain biking. While I’ve had fun riding the nearby trails at Harbison State Forest, my rusty old Target bike just wasn’t cutting it, so I finally decided on a new one. It’s a 2007 Gary Fisher Piranha and the picture above is what it looked like after a 6 mile inaugural ride on Monday night.
Along with mountain biking, Amy and I have both been trying to find fun ways to fit more exercise into our weekly schedule. One way we’ve done this is by joining an intramural dodgeball team at USC. Our team name is “Not in the face, we’re models!”, and although we didn’t come up with the name, Amy and I designed very cool personalized jerseys for our team. We had our first match last night which consists of as many games as you can play in 35 minutes. Although we lost, we had a great time and are looking forward to our next match. Finally, we also signed up (along with a bunch of our friends) to participate in the Cooper River Bridge 10K in Charleston. I’m training to run the whole thing, and Amy is training to walk 5K and run 5K. This is a big challenge for both of us, but we’re looking forward to it.
As you can tell, it’s been a crazy but happy few weekends for us and we can only hope that the rest of 2007 will be as fun and exciting as it started out.

The bike looks even better in your picture. I’m sure you will get many seasons of riding from it.
Biking… Running… and Dodgeball… I like the shirts, it’s a nice play on the rules I would think.
And finally the million dollar question.
Can I pre-order the book anywhere?

Million dollar question, huh?
I think Sitepoint is going to go straight to sales and not do a preorder stage. I’ll soon have a referral URL though which will give me a little extra credit for each sale. I’ll send that out to everyone who is interested in buying it as soon as it’s available! Actually, I’ll be creating a book promotion page soon (with it’s own URL) and a nice feature would be a “Notify me by email when it’s available” form. Either way, I’ll be sure to let you know, B!

You wrote a book?! Freakin sweet. I’m way jealous about the dodgeball team, what a great game. Just to give you a little tip: even though hitting the other team in the head usually doesn’t count, it’s still really really fun!

Jason, WOW…the book is so great looking ! You should be very proud, Daddy and I are. Thank You and Congradulations.
You and Amy did an outstanding job on the team shirts, way neat. What about Dodgeball on bikes?
Sounds like your jumpin right into a better “07″, rememeber to rest a little as well, cause 10K ain’t
no walk in the park. Daddy and I wll be praying for you. Love Mom

I just finished reading your book and it is great. This is the first book on web design that I have actually read cover to cover. I am new to web design and am going to try to design a site for a friend who is a roofing contractor. Armed with your advice I started scouting out roofing sites and found that they are all awful. I am learning Expression Web and a couple of tools that I really like are Xara Xtreme and Snagit.
Thanks for the great book.

Got your book in the mail today! I was impressed with all
of the pictures (I’m a big fan of books with pictures).
Also - what’s with all the UF Gators’ colors - some kind of
subliminal message going on? Seriously though, how cool is that - you’re an author! Sweet.
