New Living Room Fans
October 15th, 2006
Home ImprovementWhen we decided to buy our house, one of the biggest deciding factors was the living room with it’s huge vaulted ceilings and tall windows. One of our least favorite parts of the living room though was the dated can lights that provided very little light because they were so high up. Vince suggested that we replace them with ceiling fans.
After a lot of thought and discussion about style and downrod length we finally decided to do it. We bought two 60 inch modern fans and two 4 foot downrods. We thought it was going to be a quick Saturday morning project, but the slope of the ceiling turned out to be too much for the hardware. After quite a bit of frustration, I went to a fan specialty store and bought a slope reducing metal cone adapter “thingy” (you’ll see it in the pictures) to put between the mounting box and the fan bracket. Even though that solution ended up working, the screws that came with the adapter were a little short, so I had to clear out the popcorn around the adapter and really push the bracket in order to attach the nuts to the bolts - all while standing about 20 feet up in the air on a ladder resting against the ceiling drywall.
Even with all the frustration and the fact that we didn’t completely finish them till about 10:30 last night, it was worth all the effort. Our new fans are as beautiful as they are functional. We’ll even be able to use them during the winter because the remote control allows you to switch the rotation direction to circulate the warm air. They are Hampton Bay 60″ Brookdale Fans. Not on Home Depot.com, but they were regularly priced $179, we got them for $130 something each during the lighting sales.
Good Luck!

Just bought these for our 20ft ceiling and electrican cant install because we do not have the slope adapter. Bought them at home depot and they dont have the adapter. Can you tell me where you got them?? Thanks 10 days till move in. Your fan looks great. Cant wait to see ours. We just got a hang rod because they figured out something was wrong, with the regular adapter. Thanks Nick

found your site while searching for information about these fans. We have this in our master, but it always seems so dark. do you know what the max wattage is? i know it came with the 40 watt, but I’d like to replace with at least a 60…any idea. thanks.

I also have the same issue as Nicole - unfortunately these only use 3×40W candelabra bulbs. I’m hoping the new compact fluorescent candelabras will fix this soon.

I just bought one of these fans today and need a longer downrod. It only comes with a 12 inch and 4 1/2 inch rod. Where did you purchase your downrod with the same finish?

Wow…for some reasons I’m not getting emails when comments come in to our blog, but a quick answer to some questions is deserved:
@Nicholas: I bought the slope adapter at Dan’s Fan City. I think it’s a chain but it’s a shop that is just around the corner from where we live. I think I paid about $25 each for them. That’s probably a ripoff since they’re really just little metal domes. I’d search around online.
@Nicole: We put the max suggested wattage in ours and it provides a fair amount of light. Probably could use more at times, but it works fine.
@Mark: We bought the longer downrod at Home Depot. Most Lowe’s and Home Depot stores carry longer downrods in Black, Nickel, White, and Brass finishes. I think ours are 5 ft.
