Poor Abby
April 17th, 2006
Abby, FamilyAmes and I have decided that it’s time to teach Abby kung-fu. I think we’ll have to hold off on the training regimen as we just got her home from the vet and she’s a little tipsy. We noticed that she was acting a little odd yesterday. It’s hard to describe what “acting odd” means exactly, but she wasn’t really herself. When she decided last night not to come sleep upstairs we got a little more suspicious. By this morning she was very weak and gave a painful meow when Ames tried to pick her up. We knew then that we would have to take her to the vet, but we had no idea what was wrong. Around noon we took her in to get checked out and they found a scabbed over bite wound on her chest that they said was probably from another cat. Our poor little fluffball had to get sedated so they could clean the wound and staple it up.

This was the first time we’d taken her to the vet so they vaccinated her for rabies and checked for feline lukemia. She was definitely traumatized by the whole experience, but we’re hoping she’ll be ok. Since we moved in up here, Abby has gone from being our favorite neighborhood cat to a member of our family and I think we’ll be keeping her inside from now on if possible…that way we don’t really have to teach her kung-fu.

UPDATE: Abby has had 3 days of antibiotics and we were concerned that her energy level hadn’t been improving. I was starting to get really down about her situation but at about 6am this morning, she crawled in bed and cuddled up with me (her usual early morning routine) so I knew she was feeling a little better. Then she ate her normal amount of breakfast and jumped up on the sink while we were brushing our teeth for her daily faucet drink. She still seems a little tired and she still hates her twice daily antibiotics but we think she’s on the road to getting better finally. Hopefully she’ll be back to playing with her “feathers on a stick” in no time!
